We all know that Oxygen is necessary for all life. It only stands to reason that the more deeply we breathe, the more oxygen we have to fuel our brains and bodies.
But what you may not know is that most children are breathing shallowly by the age of five years old because they are initiating the breath with the rib cage muscles (intercostals) rather than the diaphragm. See diagram below.
As shown in the diagram, inhalation must begin with the diaphragm and then rise up into the chest area. Otherwise, only a fraction of the oxygen needed to thrive is received. Deliberate attention and corrective practice are required to correct this problem, which restricts energy flow, stamina, and overall health in many children and adults.
All the most successful performing artists and athletes in the world practice and master deep, diaphragmatic breathing.
We call it “Belly Button Breathing” to make it easy for kids to understand. Whatever you call it, deep breathing is a must when it comes to strength, energy, endurance… winning!
We’ve all cringed as that angry coach yelled at our kid… or even another team member. When that happens, most kids tense up and go into “fight, flight or freeze” mode… it might help them run faster, but strategy is often lost because the intelligent part of the brain goes offline.
Self-confidence is key in sports, because when we have it we can access the parts of the brain that let us focus, concentrate, breathe, and play our part. Both EFT Tapping and Belly Button Breathing can help your kid master the mental side of the game… or art.
Tapping is not recommended on the soccer field during the heat of a game, but breathing is always necessary. Tapping can be incorporated into breaks and down time. In choir, band practice or individual athletics, Tapping can be your best friend any time!
